The history about M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark
Just below sea level, in the newly renovated Culture Harbour Kronborg and next to Kronborg Castle, lies the Danish Maritime Museum. By following the sloping bridges into the old dry dock, you’ll discover one of Denmark’s most striking recent architectural landmarks.
Designed by the award-winning BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group, the museum vividly tells the story of Denmark’s maritime heritage, blending modern innovation with deep historical roots.
From 1915 to 2012, the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark, then called The Trade and Maritime Museum, was housed in Kronborg Castle. Initially focused on Danish shipping’s role in trade, fishing, and the military, it later shifted to the history of the Danish merchant fleet from the Middle Ages onward.
In 2013, the museum reopened in a new location and adopted its current name: M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark.
Before the opening, five years of work were dedicated to creating the spectacular building designed by the renowned architectural firm BIG, led by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels. M/S was BIG’s first museum project.
From a distance, the museum is almost hidden, but it soon emerges—an old concrete dry dock with glass and aluminum bridges and dramatic staircases. A sloping bridge guides visitors into an underground world of maritime adventures, enhanced by the striking architecture.
